The Cape Verde Islands are an unspoilt tropical paradise.

Cape Verde Islands Map ABOUT CAPE VERDE

Situated 450km off the coast of Sengal, this archipelago of ten islands is a hidden jewel in the Atlantic.

A former Portuguese colony, independent for just thirty years, Cape Verde has shown sustained economic growth and enjoys the highest living standards in West Africa. The population is approximately 450,000 and the official language is Portuguese, although Creole is widely spoken. The most developed tourist island is Sal, although Santiago is the largest island, containing half of Cape Verdes population. Its capital Praia is soon to open a new international airport.

Santo Antao Island The republic of Cape Verde is comprised of the ten islands that form the archipelago, about 500 km to the west of Senegal and about 1,000 km south of the Canary Islands. The Creole population is prevalently Christian and there is a good level of education. The languages spoken are Portuguese (the official language) and Creole, idioms similar to Spanish and Italian. The efficient national healthcare system and lack of tropical diseases mean that no vaccinations or anti-malaria treatments are required to visit or live in Cape Verde.

The islands Santa Antao, Mindelo, San Luzia, San Vicente, San Nicolau Sal, Boa Vista, Santiago, Maio, Fogo and Brava, each have their own charm, beauty, stunning scenery and unique character. Island hopping via national airline TACV is convenient and worthwhile.

The Island of Sal is already an established holiday destination, discovered by the Italians, Germans and Americans, the British are just starting to realise the assets of this wonderful Island. Crystal clear warm waters, white sun kissed beaches and calm tropical environment.

Sal Island The wide expanse of beaches, are perfect for families, couples and especially those who favour water sports, such as wind surfing and fishing. Many beach front restaurants are available to enjoy the locally caught fresh fish and a refreshing cool drink.

The weather is almost perfect, with a temperature range of between 22-29 C, occasionally rising into the low 30´s C. August and September months see light rain. The islands are blessed with a cooling sea breeze, which is welcoming, making the temperatures very bearable.

Santiago Island The language on the Islands is Portuguese and a local "Creole". Italian is also spoken, and Spanish is readily understood. English is increasingly understood in the hotels, shops, bars and restaurants around the Island.

The currency is the Cape Verde Escudo, but Euros and US Dollars are accepted everywhere. The Escudo is permanently linked in value to the Euro.

Sal Island is the most developed of the Islands, with good infrastructure including roads, water/electricity supplies and clean well kept beaches in the resorts such as Santa Maria.

Santo Antao IslandOver the weekend the beaches are buzzing with the locals sounds of musicians, locals and holiday makers alike enjoying the beautiful beaches and fresh clear waters.

In particular the pier in Santa Maria is a focal point to watch the fishing boats fetch in the days catch and watch those fishing off the pier trying to catch the evenings supper.

Although Sao Vicente is less well known, the prospect of an international airport will quickly change that. With stunning scenery, beautiful beaches and friendly locals, Sao Vicente is set to become a firm favourite. The capital, Mindelo, is the cultural capital of the Cape Verde Islands, with music, festivals, vibrant night life and new marina.

Santo Antao is the second largest of the Cape Verde Isles, yet one of the least 'discovered.' It boasts spectacular scenery especially in the north where the land is cultivated with sugar cane, bananas, papayas, coffee, mango and coconut trees.
